Understanding Abnormal Laboratory Test Results Leads to Better Physician Queries

Coding Education Webinar
2 AHIMA and 1 AAPC CEU Credit
$85.00

June 17, 2008
10 a.m. Central (11 Eastern, 8 Pacific)

Coders often see abnormal lab values but are uncertain as to whether these results warrant a physician query for an additional diagnosis. This presentation links abnormal lab values seen on such tests as hematology, electrolytes, blood gases, general chemistry, cardiac enzymes, and liver profiles to potential diagnoses. This will help coders have confidence in knowing when to query the physician because no correlating diagnosis is documented in the medical record or for more specificity in a diagnosis.

This Webinar Will Include

  • Reviewing the significance of abnormal values on:
    • CBC
    • Urinalysis
    • Lipid profile
    • General chemistry profile
    • Sputum culture and sensitivity
    • Blood culture and sensitivity
  • The significance of lab test values in written progress notes
  • Test findings indicative of the stage of malnutrition
  • Laboratory values related to uncontrolled diabetes
  • Laboratory findings that support the diagnosis of sepsis and anemia
  • Explanation of the term "precipitous drop in HCT"
  • Guidelines related to coding based on abnormal lab findings
  • Review of the AHIMA Practice Brief released May 12,2008 related to Queries

Who Should Attend
